What Is CBD?
CBD stands for cannabidiol. Cannabis, also known as marijuana, contains over 500 natural compounds. Cannabinoids make up at least 85-100 of those compounds. While some cannabinoids are psychoactive, others are not.
The two cannabinoids that are the most researched are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). THC is known for its psychoactive properties and is responsible for the “high” when smoking or ingesting marijuana. CBD does not have psychoactive properties and does NOT give a person that “high” feeling.
It has been shown that we all have cannabinoid receptors in our bodies. There are no harsh chemicals CB1 receptors, located within the nervous system, the brain and nerve endings, and CB2 receptors, located within the immune system. When cannabinoids are used together they seem to work synergistically for maximum benefit (“Entourage Effect”).
The potential medicinal uses of CBD are endless and may offer safer alternatives to prescription medication in the future as further scientific evidence comes forth.
